B-Bop Records / Third Space Celebrate Grand Opening
March 26-31 // 6 Days of Live Art Events

B-Bop Records is Toledo’s oldest and newest record store. B-Bop first opened as a brick and mortar in 1987 by Amjad Doumani, providing music lovers with an extensive selection of quality, LPs, CDs, 45s, videos, books, magazines, memorabilia and many one-of-a-kind collectibles. After selling exclusively online since 1994, Doumani now celebrates the re-opening of B-Bop Records in an innovative and progressive storefront in Third Space.

Third Space is not only home to B-Bop Records, but also to the Lucas County Green Party and the Media Decompression Collective (MDC). What brings these entities together is a community spirit of sharing resources, similar political views and an activist spirit. Third Space can be rented by other organizations or people in the community for meetings, film screenings, art and music events…a multitude of activities. Within Third Space is a relatively large progressive and radical library, a lounge area with free wifi and coffee and tea.

B-Bop Records / Third Space are proud and excited about the 6 Days of Live Art Events during the Grand Opening, March 26 – 31, 2012. There is no admission to any event, however donations to Third Space are welcome, and a hat will be passed at each event for the presenters and performing artists. B-Bop Records will offer 20% off all purchases throughout the week.

NawdyAuddy is a young female emcee associated with Toledo's own, Black Crow Militia. Contradictory to her stage name, she considers herself a "recording activist" trying to spread positive messages within the hip-hop/rap scene.

not where Third Space got it's name - but pretty cool and aligned - Edward Soja is a post modern political geographer. Here is what Wikipedia says about his theory called "Thirdspace":
Soja developed a theory of Thirdspace in which “everything comes together… subjectivity and objectivity, the abstract and the concrete, the real and the imagined, the knowable and the unimaginable, the repetitive and the differential, structure and agency, mind and body, consciousness and the unconscious, the disciplined and the transdisciplinary, everyday life and unending history.” [3] As he explains, “I define Thirdspace as an-Other way of understanding and acting to change the spatiality of human life, a distinct mode of critical spatial awareness that is appropriate to the new scope and significance being brought about in the rebalanced trialectices of spatiality-historicality-sociality.” [3] Soja constructs Thirdspace from the spatial trialectics established by Henri Lefebvre in Production of Spaceand Michael Foucault’s concept of heterotopia. He synthesizes these theories with the work of postcolonial thinkers from Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak to bell hooks, Edward Said to Homi Bhabha.

Like Lefebvre, sometimes called a mystical Marxist, Soja demonstrates leanings towards a monadic mysticism in his Thirdspace. He formulates Thirdspace by analogy with the Aleph, a concept of spatial infinity developed by Jorge Luis Borges. [4] Thirdspace is a radically inclusive concept that encompasses epistemology, ontology, and historicity in continuous movement beyond dualisms and toward “an-Other”: as Soja explains, “thirding produces what might best be called a cumulative trialectics that it radically open to additional otherness, to a continuing expansion of spatial knowledge.” [5] Thirdspace is a transcendent concept that is constantly expanding to include “an-Other,” thus enabling the contestation and re-negotiation of boundaries and cultural identity. Soja here closely resembles Homi Bhabha’s theory of cultural hybridization, in which “all forms of culture are continually in a process of hybridity,” that “displaces the histories that constitute it, and sets up new structures of authority, new political initiatives… The process of cultural hybridity gives rise to something different, something new and unrecognizable, a new area of negotiation of meaning and representation.” [6]

This week Amjad opened B-Bop Records for business at it's new location at Third Space after being an exclusively e-commerce business since 1994 (first retail storefront opened in '87). Congrats, Amjad, you have been working so hard! 

Third Space's first Rent Party was pretty successful! Joyous folks gathered for New Year's Eve...delicious food covered the extremely large square table (thank you ANITA & KATRINA & ...) and BYOB was enough to go around and around. Thank you AMJAD & JOSH for playing awesome grooves all night. Everyone did an amazing job pulling this off and it goes to show how many sweet people are looking forward to the opening of Third Space and infiltrating Toledo with radical radiance.
